Ahram Online , MENA , Monday 17 Oct 2022

Egypt’s Foreign Minister and President Designate for the 27th session of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27) said on Sunday that the conference will feature a presidential roundtable on water security.

FM Shoukry

In his speech during the opening ceremony of the fifth edition of Cairo Water Week (CWW 2022), Shoukry announced that COP27, which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh from 6-18 November, will see the launch of the Action of Water Adaptation and Resilience (AWARE) initiative on the day dedicated to the water issue.

Shoukry reviewed Egypt’s efforts to boost the water agenda in the conference next month as well as in the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York City in March 2023, calling on the participants to present initiatives at the two events.

He stated that Egypt is one of the top countries suffering from water scarcity and one of the driest countries in the world. Egypt has been dedicating its national efforts to attain Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on water through Egypt's 2030 Vision.

Shoukry added that Egypt is moving towards this goal while ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, through a strategic plan for managing water resources until 2037.

The Egyptian foreign minister called on the participants in the CWW 2022 to discuss the challenges facing water-scarce countries, transboundary cooperation under international law for regional peace, stability, and integration, ways to optimise technology and innovation, and means to secure the funds necessary for implementing environmentally sustainable projects.

The 5th edition of CWW 2022 kicked off on Sunday in Cairo under the theme: "Water at the Heart of Climate Action."

This year’s edition features over 1,000 participants from 70 countries and 66 international organisations.

The annual event, which aims to spread awareness about water issues and promote innovation to face the most pressing water-related challenges, is scheduled to run through Wednesday.
