Senegalese President and President of the African Union Macky Sall
In a speech delivered during the high-level segment proceedings of the UN Climate Summit Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Sall said COP27 is an opportunity for bringing about a historical transformation. He noted that African countries support just green transition despite their low contribution to CO2 emissions.
Sall thanked President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for the warm reception. Africa, he said, was keen on collaborating with all its partners to ensure that COP27 marks a significant turning point in the efforts aiming to reduce the impact of climate change.
He pointed out that Africa was committed to the Paris Agreement and to creating the Great Green Wall, a project currently being implemented in 11 countries in the Sahel and Sahara regions.
The leaders’ summit of COP27 kicked off on Monday and runs through Tuesday. Almost 110 heads of state and government are expected to deliver their national statements on climate issues.
Other meetings are set to be held on the sidelines of COP27 over the coming two weeks.
