20:00 Germany joined France and the Netherlands in pulling out of a 1994 energy treaty which critics say protects investments in fossil fuels.
"We are consistently aligning our trade policy with climate protection and are withdrawing accordingly from the Energy Charter Treaty," said Franziska Brantner, parliamentary state secretary at the Economy Ministry.
"This is also an important signal to the UN Climate Change Conference," she added.
France and the Netherlands have withdrawn from the treaty in recent weeks as they deem it to be incompatible with the Paris climate accord to combat global warming.
18:20 Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb stressed his country’s keenness on protecting the environment, saying that 30 percent of Saudi Arabia’s land area has been designated as natural protectorates.
The minister made the remarks in a session on sustainable tourism as part of the second edition of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Forum, held on the sidelines of COP27.
The minister said his country prioritises environmental protection in Saudi Vision 2030.

14:45 House Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds a US Congressional Delegation press conference at the COP27.
Pelosi arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh yesterday to attend the COP27 where she met with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.
During the conference, Pelosi highlighted the US efforts and plans on climate actions.
She lamented that climate issues have been discussed for decades as a matter of mere survival. “It has always been about the survival of the planet and the survival of the vulnerable countries at risk. We want more than survival.”
“We know there is much more that needs to be done. We accomplished the Inflation Reduction Act -- something that has never been done before in our country and other countries”, the US House Speaker said.
Pelosi stressed that the act promotes justice, diversity and inclusiveness and also encourages several actors to tackle climate change.
Pelosi thanked Egypt for hosting COP27 and choosing Africa as a theme of the annual gathering, saying” we learn so much from this continent about where we go from.”
“We hope COP27 be the threshold that we all cross to remove all doubts that we are as a world serious about saving the planet for the children,” she added

14:40 US President Joe Biden will spend three hours in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, official sources told Ahram Online. 13:15 In the session titled "The Decarbonisation Challenge," participants – including Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla and US climate envoy John Kerry – underscored the importance of investing in the decarbonisation of the highest emitting sectors, as well as identifying new technologies to further streamline the process.
US Climate Envoy John Kerry said on Friday the G20 is responsible for 80% of the world's emissions, noting COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh is the beginning of implementation.
Kerry asserted the importance of shifting to the energy transition and reducing the emission of methane globally, pointing out that the results would be amazing by 2030, if all countries were committed to the Global Methane Initiative.
All countries should collaborate to face climate change and the temperature rise, he added.
13:10 Egypt's green economy transition file, NWFE, has won first place among North African and European countries for the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) initiative on nature and climate investments, Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat announced Thursday.

13:00 Dozens of environmental activists have gathered inside the UN climate conference venue, protesting against the continued global investment in fossil fuels.
The protesters called for negotiators at COP27, particularly those from the world's largest emitters, to pay more to address the impacts of climate change in poorer countries in Africa.
Nigerian activist Lucky Abeng, from the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance, told AP they would continue to pressure world leaders to do more for countries who “contribute nothing or less in changing the climate.”
Africa is responsible for just 4% of global emissions despite making up 17% of the world's population, but is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change.

12:30 The UN Environment Programme unveiled the satellite-based Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) as part of efforts to cut down on the major contributor to global warming.
Methane, emitted by leaks in fossil fuel installations as well as from livestock farming and landfills, is responsible for roughly 30 percent of the global rise in temperatures to date.
Dozens of countries last year pledged to act to cut pollution from the potent greenhouse gas.
MARS satellites will detect and identify the source of methane "hot spots," the UNEP said in a statement.
UNEP would then notify governments and companies about the emissions "so that the responsible entity can take appropriate action."
