Al-Mahrousa Publishing house will launch the world famous Japanese comic series Barefoot Gen by the acclaimed Japanese Cartoonist Keiji Nakazawa on Sunday 12 August at the Greek Campus in Downtown Cairo at 6pm.
The launch will celebrate the publishing of the first three volumes of the 10-volume series. The books are translated by Maher El-Sherbiny.
The series is based on the Hiroshima bombing in 1945, of which Nakazawa (14 Mar 1939 – 19 Dec 2002) was a survivor. The series is based on his firsthand experience as a Hiroshima survivor, and it starts a few days before the bombing on 6 August and covers the aftermath in the city. Gen is the name of the protagonist of the series.
Barefoot Gen is considered one of the most important anti-war manga (Japanese cartoon) series ever written. It was first published in Japanese between 1973 and 1974, and was later adapted into an animated movie. It was translated into English in the 1970s.
