The study by El-Anani argues that the role of religion in public space after the Egyptian January 25 Revolution will determine the form of democratic transition.

El-Anani isn't too pessimistic in the face of major concerns over religious polarisation and the rise of Islamist rule in Egypt. Religion seems to be taking a bigger share of public space in comparison to secularism after president Mubarak was ousted from his 30-year reign in Egypt.

However, El-Anani argues that there isn’t one Islamist power that is completely overtaking public space, and that the Islamists are now divided.

The more Egypt moves towards democracy, the book concludes, the more that diverse ideologies will spread, which will force traditional Islamists and political parties to change their discourse.
