Event: Gender studies pioneer Joan Scott to give lectures in Cairo next week

American University in Cairo will host Joan Scott next week to lecture on Gender and Veil policies in France on 21 and 23 April

American historian of France, and gender studies pioneer, Joan Wallach Scott, will be visiting Egypt next week to give lectures on “The politics of the veil in contemporary France” and another lecture titled “The uses and abuses of gender as a category of analysis”.

Joan Scott it hosted by the History department in the American University in Cairo (AUC), where the lectures will be held. The first lecture will be on 21 April, at the AUC campus in Tahrir Square at 5:00pm with instant translation into Arabic.

The second lecture will be held on the conferences room P007 at the AUC Head Quarters at the fifth settlement at 1:00pm; translation will not be offered for this lecture.

Scott is currently a professor at the Institute for Advanced study at Princeton University. She has published several books on the French proletariat and the history of the working woman in France. Her 1986 article ‘Gender: A useful category of Historical analysis’ was a hugely influential piece, even considered by some to be a launch pad for the field of gender studies in Anglo-American Universities.
