Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) received more than 38,000 donations during the first half of 2012, including encyclopaedias, periodicals and multimedia resources.

Manal Amin, head of technical operations at the BA, said that the library receives large collections of books periodically from institutions, universities, libraries and governments.

The BA last year received thousands of books from numerous institutions, including the Green Library of Stanford University, the Ecuadorian embassy in Cairo, the Chinese Administration of Publications and Journalism, the British Council in Alexandria and Egypt’s Supreme Council for Culture.

The Books for Africa Institution in Minnesota donated more than 22,000 books to the BA last year in various fields of knowledge, including newly released law reference books.

The largest donation to the BA came from the French National Library, which dedicated 500,000 books between 1996 and 2006 to make the library the world’s fourth largest collection of French-language books outside France, behind the New York Public Library in third.
