Imed Trabelsi was arrested on January 14, on the day Ben Ali and his wife Leila Trabelsi fled to Saudi Arabia
A court in Tunisia on Saturday sentenced Imed Trabelsi, nephew of the powerful wife of ousted Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, to two years in prison for drug use, a judicial source said.
The ruling marked the first time a member of Ben Ali's close family has been sentenced to jail time since he was ousted in a popular uprising in January.
"Imed Trabelsi was sentenced to two years in prison without the eligibility of parole and to pay a fine of 2,000 dinars ($1,450/1,015 euros)," the source told AFP.
Trabelsi was sentenced during a 30-minute court session in Tunis, the source said.
Trabelsi was arrested on January 14, on the day Ben Ali and his wife Leila Trabelsi fled to Saudi Arabia. He was held with other members of his family at a military base at Aouina near Tunis.
