The Algerian foreign minister Ramtane Lamamra said on Thursday that Algeria will not participate in the Saudi led military operation against the Houthi Shia in Yemen, the Algeria news website Echorouk Online reported.

On the sidelines of Arab summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Lamamra stressed that Algeria supports political dialogue between all parties as the Houthis are a main player in Yemeni politics.

Lamamra also said that the Algerian army only fights within its own land.

Saudi Arabia, along with Arab allies Egypt, Sudan, UAE, Jordan, as well as Pakistan, launched airstrikes and ground operations in Yemen on Thursday morning against the Houthi militias.

The Iraqi foreign minister said earlier on Thursday that Iraq opposes that Saudi-led air strikes, stating that military intervention is not a solution, AFP reported.

Meanwhile, the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Thursday warned of regional risks from fighting in Yemen and said there could be no military solution.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Yemen expressed concern at reports of civilian casualties after the air strikes in the capital Sana’a and other parts of the country, according to its press release on Thursday.

Arab foreign ministers held a consultative meeting ahead of the upcoming Arab League summit on Thursday, as several Arab states announced war against rebels in Yemen.

The Arab Summit will be held on 28-29 March in Sharm El-Sheikh.
