Israeli police are imposing a night-time curfew in the city of Lod, which has been the scene of unrest in recent days.

Police said in a statement on Wednesday that they would enforce a ban on people entering the city, residents leaving their homes, and people being in public spaces starting 8pm.

Lod has seen two nights of a crackdown by Israeli police on Arab Palestinian protesters.

Israeli authorities have declared a state of emergency in the city and deployed border police forces.

Arab Palestinians who reside inside of the state of Israel proper have taken to the streets in recent days in solidarity with Palestinian protests in East Jerusalem against Israeli attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque and plans to evict 500 Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in the old city.

Arab Palestinians in Israel, who constitute 20 percent of Israel's 9 million population, are also known as the Arabs of 1948, in reference to them not having been displaced like their compatriots during the 1948 war.

The Arab citizens of Israel have complained for decades of being treated as second-class citizens by the Israeli government.

Arab Palestinians in other Israeli cities have also joined demonstrations in solidarity with protests in Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank against Israeli aggression.
