So far Republican challenger Mitt Romney is leading with 88 out of the 270 electoral college votes needed to win, as US networks project he will pick up traditional Republican strongholds mainly in the south.
Democratic incumbent President Barack Obama is ahead in safe states on the East Coast and has 79 electoral college votes. But many of the vote-rich states such as Florida have yet to be called.
