Khaled Meshaal has been re-elected as the head of Palestinian resistance group Hamas' politburo for another four-year term, sources told Al-Ahram's Arabic-language news website on Monday evening.
The vote, held by members of the group's Shura Council, took place at a Cairo hotel.
In advance of the election, there had been some speculation that Meshaal – who has long been based outside the Gaza Strip – would be forced aside by the movement's Gaza-based leaders.
Al-Ahram, however, cited sources close to the voting process who confirmed Meshaal's re-election.
Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip since mid-2007.
