Nigeria’s ruling PDP party candidate has won a weekend election for the governorship post in President Goodluck Jonathan's oil-rich home state of Bayelsa, officials said on Sunday

Henry Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) "has been declared winner in the Bayelsa governorship election," Kayode Idowu, a spokesman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), told AFP.

"In our record, 35 candidates ran in the election and he won," he added.

The PDP candidate polled 417,500 votes to emerge winner, with the opposition CAP aspirant coming a distant second with 22,534, acording to official results released by the electoral body,

In a congratulatory message on Sunday, Jonathan urged Dickson's government to work "with total dedication and commitment to justify the peoples' confidence."

A week earlier, Jonathan warned Dickson that he risked being "stoned" by the people of the state if he failed to perform as expected if elected as governor.

The volatile state has seen a series of bombings and shootings among rival politicians in recent months.
