UN Security Council condemns G-Bissau coup

The UN Security Council on Friday condemned a coup d'etat in Guinea-Bissau and said the civilian government must be returned to power, the US ambassador to the United Nations said.

"Members of the Security Council condemned the military action and urged the immediate restoration of civilian authority," Ambassador Susan Rice said after council talks.

Rice, speaking for the 15-member council which is currently headed by the United States, indicated a formal statement could come later.

However, she added that the situation in Guinea-Bissau is "evolving rapidly and that it is not easy to confirm information at this time."

She noted that the fate of Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Junior -- the favorite in a second-round run-off ballot set for April 29 -- and interim president Raimundo Pereira was unclear since their arrest.

"Their whereabouts cannot be confirmed at this time," she said.
