"We urge both sides to move forward in response to the US-led effort to conclude a humanitarian truce, given the immediate urgency of de-escalating the violence and ending the suffering of the Sudanese people," a State Department spokesperson said.
The announcement comes as reports of atrocities have surfaced from the Sudanese city of El-Fasher, where the RSF militia dislodged the army from its last stronghold in the vast western Darfur region.
The RSF militia—which has been accused of genocide and crimes against humanity—has since carried out mass killings, looting and sexual violence there and has in recent days appeared to turn its focus to the neighbouring Kordofan region, where fierce battles are underway.
The Sudanese military and national government did not immediately comment on the RSF's announcement.
