US Secretary of State John Kerry held talks with embattled Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki Monday during a surprise trip to Baghdad to shore up the country, an AFP journalist said.

The meeting was the first of several discussions that were to be held between Kerry and Iraqi leaders across the political and communal spectrum.
