Spain will temporarily evacuate its ambassador and most of its embassy staff from Libya because of the "worsening security situation" in the capital Tripoli, the foreign ministry said Thursday.
"The government of Spain trusts that the situation of instability in Libya can be overcome soon and reiterates its call for a ceasefire as soon as possible," the statement added.
One staff member will remain in charge of the embassy.
The move comes two days after a Spanish military plane evacuated 60 European nationals, including 37 Spaniards who had requested assistance to leave the country.
Fresh fighting between rival Libyan militias for control of key installations has claimed scores of lives in the past two weeks.
The United States, Canada, France and Brazil have temporarily shuttered their embassies in Tripoli, while several Western countries have advised their nationals to leave immediately.
Egypt is also helping its nationals who seek to leave the country.
