US strike hits Syrian rebel compound: Activists

AP , Thursday 6 Nov 2014

Syrian activists say that a US airstrike hit the compound of a hard-line rebel group which is not affiliated to the Islamic State extremist organization.

Activists said the strike was among several that occurred early Thursday in towns along the Syrian border with Turkey.

Activist Ahmad Qaddour said a strike hit an Islamic court belonging to Ahrar al-Sham, a rebel group that follows an extremely conservative interpretation of Islam. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said other strikes hit compounds of the Nusra Front in the border towns of Sarmada and Harem.

The Nusra Front is Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, but it has fought against the Islamic State. The US accuses the Nusra Front of harboring a militant cell that was plotting attacks against American and Western interests.
