The UN Security Council is to hold closed door consultations on Tuesday on the worsening crisis in Yemen.

The meeting was requested by Britain following heavy clashes on Monday between a Shiite militia known as the Huthis and government forces in the capital Sanaa.

UN special envoy Jamal Benomar is to report to the council on the latest developments.

Yemen has been wracked by unrest for months, raising fears of a collapse of President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi's government, an ally in Washington's fight against Al-Qaeda.
