The Arab League's secretary-general met on Friday with a Russian envoy to discuss the situation in Libya, Syria and Yemen, he said in exclusive comments to Ahram Online.
Secretary-General Nabil El-Arabi said the envoy told him about the endeavours of Moscow to get the approval of both Syria's Al-Assad regime and Syrian opposition figures for peace talks to be held from 6-9 April.
El-Arabi, answering a question about the Russian position towards the ongoing crisis in Yemen, said he is "neither optimistic nor pessimistic," declining to elaborate further.
Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh will host the pan-Arab organisation's summit on Saturday and Sunday.
The head of the pan-Arab organisation added that Arab heads of states will have "a secret meeting in which they will freely discuss" the current developments in the Middle East.
"Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his backing for the stances of the Arab states in a letter to be discussed during the summit," El-Arabi concluded.
