German foreign minister calls for a special UN envoy in Syria 'to bring the clear message of the international community to Damascus'

Germany's foreign minister is calling for a special United Nations envoy on Syria to be named and immediately dispatched to the country.

Guido Westerwelle on Thursday welcomed the U.N. Security Council's condemnation of President Bashar Assad's forces for attacking civilians and committing human rights violations.

Westerwelle said Germany would push for a U.N. special envoy on Syria to be named and immediately dispatched "to bring the clear message of the international community to Damascus." The Security Council statement calls on Syrian authorities to immediately end all violence and launch an inclusive political process that will allow the Syrian people to fully exercise "fundamental freedoms ... including that of expression and peaceful assembly."
