Germany expressed shock Monday over last week's mob attack on the Israeli embassy in Egypt and urged the two countries to resume peaceful relations.
"I want to express the German government's shock and concern over the attack on the Israeli embassy in Cairo," government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a regular news conference.
He added that Berlin was "relieved" that Israeli embassy staff emerged safely from the violence, adding that "everything must be done to ensure such incidents do not happen again."
Germany called on Israel and Egypt to resume "full relations in the spirit of the 1979 peace treaty" between the two nations.
The attack late Friday, in which crowds smashed through an external security wall, tossed embassy papers from balconies and tore down the Israeli flag, was the worst since Israel set up its mission in Egypt, the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with the Jewish state.
It was the latest episode in worsening relations between Egypt and Israel since the killing of six Egyptian policemen on their common border as Israel hunted militants after a deadly attack last month.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that his government was consulting with Egypt on arrangements for the return of Israel's ambassador to Cairo.
