Kuwait parliament speaker says there will be no new sessions for lawmakers until a new government is formed — the latest twist in a tense political showdown in the Gulf nation

Kuwait's parliament speaker Jassem Al-Kharafi on Tuesday announced his decision to put a freeze on all debate inside parliament, where opposition deputies have hammered the government over an alleged corruption scandal and sought to bring down the prime minister.

On Monday, Kuwait's Cabinet resigned. But the country's ruler asked officials to stay in a caretaker role until a new government is named. No timetable has been set. Kuwait has been gripped by months of growing unrest over claims that pro-government officials received payoffs that were transferred to bank accounts abroad.
