Doubts cast over Arab summit plans in Iraq

Officials assure that the summit will go ahead despite threats of violence against delegates and a lack of infrastructure

Insurgent threats and a lack of hotel space have cast doubt on whether the Arab League can hold its annual meeting in Iraq this spring. But Iraqi and league officials maintain the March 23 summit will happen as planned.

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa on Sunday reiterated that the Arab League will meet in Baghdad this year for the first time since May 1990.

This week, an al-Qaida-linked insurgent group threatened to attack the summit and anyone associated with it.

With many of Baghdad's largest hotels being rebuilt following bombings, there are also concerns on where the thousands of delegates, security officials and media would stay.
