The  Media Office at the Iraqi Joint Operations Command reported today, Thursday, the launch of a massive security operation to track down Islamic State (IS) group operatives in areas north of Baghdad.

The office said in a statement, "The Baghdad Operations Command began at dawn today, Thursday, a broad security and military operation north of Baghdad, with the participation of Baghdad Operations Command units, the Automated Infantry Brigade, Rapid Response forces, the Federal Police, and the Popular Mobilisation forces to pursue the remains of IS. "

The statement said that the operation "comes according to accurate intelligence information, to pursue the remnants of IS gangs and search areas to enhance security and stability, arrest those wanted and protect citizens."

Iraq declared in late 2017 victory over Daesh after years of fighting to regain Iraqi sovereignty over large swathes of land controlled by the IS group.
