A fierce blaze broke out Wednesday at a refinery in southern Tehran after a liquefied gas line leaked and exploded, the head of the capital's crisis team said on state television.

More than an hour after the blaze started, leaping flames and thick clouds of black smoke could be seen reaching high into the sky from far across Tehran, an AFP correspondent said.
