A Palestinian is killed following air strikes in the Gaza Strip near the Rafah border, as the Israeli military claims the assault is an attack on 'world jihad'

One Palestinian was killed on Wednesday in an Israeli air strike on Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, medics said, raising the toll from three days of violence to seven Gazans dead.

The strike targeted a man riding a motorcycle in the sprawling city which lies on the southern border with Egypt, medics said. Another man was also wounded in the raid.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Israeli military.

The military correspondent of Israeli public radio said the strike had targeted a "world jihad" operative who was suspected of being behind a deadly ambush along Israel's southern border with Egypt on Monday morning.

During the attack, at least three militants sneaked over the border and ambushed two civilian cars carrying Israeli construction workers, killing one and sparking a firefight in which two of the gunmen died.

The third is understood to have fled back to Egypt.
