The Arab League will hold its annual summit in Saudi Arabia on 19 May, a senior league official said on Sunday.

Hossam Zaki, the league’s assistant secretary-general, said the summit would be preceded by preparatory meetings of senior officials and ministers.

The gathering of leaders from the 22-member Arab League comes at a time of heightened tensions with Iran as well as wars in Syria and Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has taken a more assertive role in foreign policy under its powerful, young Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Zaki said the selection of Saudi Arabia as host and the summit’s dates came after consultations between Arab League’s Secretary-General Ahmed Abul-Gheit and Saudi officials.

Abul-Gheit's office said in a statement that the 32nd Arab League summit would be held over five days.

Separate Arab summits will also be held in Mauritania in 2023 and Saudi Arabia, focusing on development and Arab-African relations.

Arab leaders held their last summit in Algeria in November, marking the end of a three-year hiatus in Arab League gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic.
