In a statement Thursday, the Syrian foreign minister calls on all Lebanese parties to join government of Lebanese PM designate Mikati

Foreign Minister Walid Al-Muallem on Thursday urged all political parties in Lebanon to join a new government headed by the Hezbollah-backed Najib Mikati and opposed by outgoing premier Saad Al-Hariri.

"We call on all parties to join the Mikati cabinet, and Syria is ready to cooperate with this government," Muallem told a join news conference with his British counterpart William Hague.

"What has happened in Lebanon is in line with the constitution. We respect the choice of the representatives of the Lebanese people, and we hope the prime minister-designate can form a government of national unity," he added.

Mikati on Thursday began talks on forming a new government, meeting political leaders including his rival Saad AlHariri whose government was toppled on 12 January in a dispute over a UN-backed tribunal probing the murder in 2005 of Rafiq Al-Hariri, his father.
