The Free Syrian Army (FSA) announced Sunday it succeeded in killing Ahmed El-Sagheer, the head of State Security in the southern town of Daraa.
El-Sagheer died as a result of a car bomb, as reported by MENA news agency.
The attack comes a day after the government denied reports that top regime official Vice President Faruq Al-Shara had defected, as fighting raged in key battlegrounds in several parts of the country.
The conflict, which has persisted for over a year, has so far killed 23,000 people according to NGO estimates, while the UN puts the toll at 17,000.
