"Had the UNSC condemned the Zionist regime’s reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated," Iran's mission said on the social media platform X.
Iran has promised to retaliate after Israel killed two top Iranian commanders and six other Iranian military officers in Syria last week.
US President Joe Biden failed to condemn the attack and instead said that his country's commitment to Israel's security in the face of Iranian threats was "ironclad."
The Kremlin has called on all countries in the Middle East to show restraint, as the region braces to see whether Iran follows through on its threats against Israel.
US officials indicated the possibility of intervening to assist Israel in defending itself against a potential Iranian missile attack, potentially escalating tensions not only between Iran and Israel but also involving the US, Al Jazeera said.
US officials briefed the Qatar-based broadcaster that the US believes an Iranian attack in reprisal for the Israeli attack, and will be conducted by Iran itself rather than proxy forces.
Additionally, US officials stated that they had urged regional foreign ministers to exert pressure on Iran to exercise restraint.
In recent days, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has engaged in consultations with counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, and Turkey. He also visited Damascus to meet with Syrian counterparts and travelled to Oman, a potential intermediary for communication with the US.
During his visit to Muscat, Abdollahian said that the US cannot "shirk its responsibility in fully and absolutely supporting Israel’s combined war crimes."
