Morocco announces death of King Mohammed VI's mother

Princess Lalla Latifa, the mother of Morocco's King Mohammed VI and the widow of his father King Hassan II, died on Saturday, a royal palace spokesman said.

Morocco's MAP news agency carried a statement which read: "The Official Spokesperson for the Royal Palace announces, with great sadness and deep sorrow, the passing of HRH Princess Lalla Latifa, may she rest in peace, on Saturday."

Princess Lalla Latifa was born in 1946 in Khenifra, Morocco, and came from the influential Amahzoune family of the Zayane tribe.

She passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind five children: Princess Lalla Meryem, King Mohammed VI, Princess Lalla Asma, Princess Lalla Hasna, and Prince Moulay Rachid.

King Mohammed VI ascended to the throne in July 1999 upon the death of his father.

Princess Lalla Latifa, despite her royal status, did not hold official responsibilities in Morocco and did not engage in public duties.
