Tunisian police fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters gathered Friday outside the US embassy in a Tunis suburb to denounce a film mocking Islam, an AFP journalist reported.

The security forces intervened when hardline Salafist members of the several hundred-strong demonstration outside the US mission started hurling rocks, the journalist said.
