"The tragic incident took place when a rubber boat carrying 75 Sudanese refugees caught fire off the coast of Tobruk, Libya, on Sunday, while en route to Greece," the spokesperson said.
"At least 50 lives were lost."
The IOM said in a post on X that it provided lifesaving medical care to 24 survivors, stressing that urgent action is needed to end such tragedies at sea.
As of February 2025, around 867,055 migrants from 44 nationalities were residing in Libya, according to IOM data.
