The Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom said its teams treated 22 casualties with shrapnel wounds, among them two men in critical condition.

The attack occurred on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, though Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have claimed similar strikes since Israel launched its war on Gaza in late 2023.

Footage shared on social media, which AFP could not independently verify, showed a drone flying over the resort town before crashing, with smoke rising from the impact site.

Sirens sounded across Eilat, a popular resort at Israel’s southern tip near the Egyptian and Jordanian borders, before the drone struck. Authorities reported another drone attack against the city just last week.

The Houthis have repeatedly launched missiles and drones at Israel over the past two years, saying their operations are carried out in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Meanwhile, inside the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army on Wednesday intensified its assault on Gaza City, from which hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been forced to flee.
