UNIFIL condemns Israeli army construction of wall inside Lebanese territory

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Friday condemned Israeli army construction in southern Lebanon, warning that it had crossed the internationally recognized border between the two countries.

In a statement, UNIFIL said its units had conducted a survey last month of a concrete wall built southwest of the town of Yaroun, in the Bint Jbeil district of the Nabatieh Governorate. The survey revealed that the wall had rendered more than 4,000 square meters of Lebanese land inaccessible to the local population.

This month, UNIFIL observed "additional construction" of the wall in the area, with part of it extending beyond the Blue Line, the demarcation line separating the two countries.

UNIFIL has called on Israel to withdraw from Lebanese territory, emphasizing that the construction constitutes a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Israel has repeatedly violated the terms of the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon that was reached in November 2024. The Israeli occupation army has continued to occupy parts of South Lebanon and carried out hundreds of deadly airstrikes in the south and elsewhere in the country, including on UNIFIL positions.

In a separate report, Israeli media indicated that the Israeli military is building a new wall extending two kilometres into Lebanese territory, behind the Blue Line, opposite the towns of Maroun al-Ras and Ayta al-Shaab.

UNIFIL spokesperson Dany Ghafary expressed concern last week about the risk of renewed tensions in southern Lebanon due to Israeli breaches of the border. He noted that the presence of Israeli forces in certain Lebanese areas continues to impede the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Ghafary reiterated that the United Nations has repeatedly called on Israel to withdraw from these sites and remove the buffer zones.
