Israel's occupation army said Monday it had killed a Hezbollah operative in southern Lebanon, a region that has witnessed several Israeli attacks despite the ceasefire.

The Lebanese health ministry on Sunday said the strike hit a car in the town of Mansouri, just over 10 kilometres (six miles) from the Israeli border, and "resulted in the martyrdom of a citizen".

A report from Lebanon's National News Agency said the deceased was a school principal in Mansouri.

In a statement, the Israeli army said it carried out a strike on Sunday evening in the Mansouri area of southern Lebanon, killing Muhammad Ali Shuweikh.

It claimed that Shuweikh was responsible for communication between Hezbollah and the residents of the area regarding financial and military subjects.

In November last year, Lebanon and Israel agreed a ceasefire to end more than a year of war on Lebanon.

Under the deal, Israel was to withdraw its forces from south Lebanon, but it has maintained the occupation of five areas.

It has also carried out regular strikes on Lebanon, claiming it is hitting Hezbollah sites and operatives.

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon said Israeli soldiers shot at its troops on Sunday in the south of the country.

UNIFIL has been working with the Lebanese army to consolidate the truce between Israel and Hezbollah.

It said the incident "represents a serious violation of UN Security Council resolution 1701", which ended a 2006 Israeli on Lebanon, and also formed the basis of last November's truce.
