Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem Al-Thani arrived in Cairo on Thursday morning for talks on Syria, Egypt's state-run news agency MENA reported.

Arriving from Jordan with his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Kamel Amr, Al-Thani will meet foreign ministers at the Arab League to discuss Wednesday's US-Russian proposal for peace talks on Syria.

On Thursday, the Friends of Syria group told Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad to commit to peace, warning that it would boost its backing of the opposition if he failed to negotiate a political transition.

"A political solution must be reached to end the conflict and meet the aspirations of the Syrian people who, as we know, demand changing the regime and changing President Bashar Al-Assad, who insists on killing his people," AFP quoted Al-Thani as saying in Doha.

On Thursday, the Syrian National Coalition will gather for a landmark conference in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss peace talks with the regime.
