Leftist groups fear intervention aims to 'weaken the regime' not topple it, increasing imperial power in Syria

No to Obama
A top Syrian government official on Sunday dismissed the Obama administration as confused and hesitant, even as Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington has evidence of sarin gas use by Syria and that the case for a military attack is getting "stronger and stronger." (Photo: AP)
Leftist groups in the Middle East issue strong statement condemning all forms of foreign intervention in Syria.

The statement was prepared by Egypt's Revolutionary Socialists, Syria's Revolutionary Left Current, Iraq's Union of Communists, Morocco's Al-Mounadil-a, and Lebanon's Socialist Forum.

Any intervention, spearheaded by the US and in alliance with global powers, the statement said, will be made under the veil of "legitimacy." However, such powers "will not wait for the Security Council decision due to an anticipated Russian-Chinese veto."

The groups fear intervention will enable foreign parties on the ground to seize power, ignoring the collective will of movements and falling short of toppling the regime, which the statement claims is far from the intended outcome.

In reality, intervention only serves as a pretext to "punish the regime," they added.

In a cold war-like scenario, weakening the regime will likely lead to the strengthening of US imperialism vis-a-vis Russia in determining the future of Syria.

Washington and Moscow have been trying to bring both sides of the Syrian conflict to the negotiating table in a conference dubbed 'Geneva 2', despite supporting opposing sides.

The statement also condemns intervention by the Gulf States and Iran.

This comes as world powers deliberate on a reponse to the alleged chemical weapons attack in Damascus, which left over 1400 dead.
