A helicopter crashed in a sparsely populated area in Mexico's state of Veracruz, killing two people, a state official said Wednesday.

"Lamentably, the pilot and co-pilot lost their lives" in the crash late Tuesday, Yolanda Gutierrez Carlin, head of the state's civil protection office, said.

The Bell 430 helicopter went down near a road in the municipality of Emiliano Zapata.
