US President Barack Obama called Thursday for the lifting of the US embargo against Cuba, rejecting it as the "legacy of a failed policy" one year after the start of a historic reconciliation.

"Congress can support a better life for the Cuban people by lifting an embargo that is a legacy of a failed policy," he said in a statement marking the anniversary.
