Fire breaks out at Kosovo government HQ during protest

A fire briefly broke out at Kosovo's government headquarters on Saturday after opposition protesters threw petrol bombs at the building in protest over an accord with former master Serbia, a Reuters reporter said.

Firefighters quickly doused the flames as police drove back several thousand demonstrators who had gathered to denounce a deal brokered by the European Union to give Kosovo's ethnic Serb minority greater local powers and the possibility of financing from Belgrade.

Kosovo, which is majority Albanian, declared independence from Serbia with the backing of the West in 2008, almost a decade after NATO air strikes drove out Serbian security forces accused of killing and expelling ethnic Albanian civilians during a counter-insurgency war.
