FBI Director James Comey is facing a complicated path under a Donald Trump administration.

Does he try to serve out the remaining seven years of his term under a president who has questioned the FBI's integrity? Or does he stay on as a safeguard against executive power?

The FBI director's term is set at 10 years as an affirmation of the bureau's political independence. Other directors have served presidents of both political parties.

As recently as Sunday, Trump complained that opponent Hillary Clinton was "protected by a rigged system" after Comey renewed his decision not to recommend charges for her use of a private email server.

FBI officials didn't respond to a message about Comey's plans. A former FBI assistant director says he doubts Comey was fazed by Trump's statements.
