Ivory Coast's Gbagbo makes first ICC appearance

AP , Monday 5 Dec 2011

Lawyers for former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo are criticising his arrest and transfer to the International Criminal Court as "neo-colonialism" ahead of his first appearance before judges

Gbagbo is due to appear before judges later Monday. He was extradited to the Netherlands last week to face charges including murder and rape committed by his supporters as he attempted to cling to power earlier this year. Gbagbo's advisor Toussaint Alain is calling the court an instrument to help France empower its friends in Africa.

Prosecutors say about 3,000 people died in violence by both sides after Gbagbo refused to concede electoral defeat. President Alassane Ouattara took power in April with the help of French and UN forces.
