The head of Italy's anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), which co-governs the country, stepped down as party leader Wednesday in a move which could trigger political shockwaves.

"I'm here today to hand in my resignation as party leader," Luigi Di Maio told a meeting of the movement's members days ahead of a key regional poll pitting the M5S and its centre-left coalition partner against Matteo Salvini's far-right League.
