International condemned Guinea-Bissau junta proposes two-year transition period to democracy

The military junta that seized power in Guinea-Bissau says it's reached an agreement to return the country to democracy.

But the soldiers who grabbed power last week and arrested top civilian leaders are proposing a two-year transition before holding new elections.

That timeframe is unlikely to appease regional mediators and the international community who have strongly condemned the power grab.

The accord also was signed late Wednesday without the participation of the country's ruling party.

No leader in nearly 40 years of independence has finished his time in office in Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony on Africa's western coast that has long been plagued by coups.
