Sanchez, Portugal's Antonio Costa and Germany's Olaf Scholz had published a joint open letter ahead of Sunday's election presenting the vote as a choice between Macron, a defender of democracy in a strong European Union, and Marine Le Pen, ``an extreme-right candidate who openly sides with those who attack our freedom and democracy, values based on the French ideas of Enlightenment.''
