Far from being a simple exchange of barbs, the encounter revealed deep contrasts between two distinct visions for America's future.

As Trump sought to reignite his past successes with populist rhetoric, Harris positioned herself as the leader of a forward-thinking and united America, navigating the country through complex challenges with a calm and decisive demeanor.

From the first moments, it became evident that this debate would shift the momentum of the race. Harris, displaying confidence and clarity, presented a compelling case for progress and unity.

In contrast, Trump appeared increasingly erratic, struggling to regain his footing as Harris methodically dismantled his arguments and reasserted her position as the front-runner.

The evening's result was a resounding affirmation of Harris’s growing dominance on the national stage, marking a significant turning point in the contest.

From the outset, Harris was prepared.

Drawing on her experience as a prosecutor, senator, and vice president, she confidently outlined her vision for the nation's future.

Her remark, “I am neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump, but I represent the new generation that will lead the United States forward,” resonated not as campaign rhetoric, but as a bold declaration of her intent to guide the country past the failures of previous administrations.

Throughout the debate, Harris displayed exceptional skill in turning Trump’s personal attacks into opportunities to elevate her standing. Dr. James Zogby, director of the Arab American Institute, told Al-Ahram that Harris "was confident, sharp in her responses, and maintained a respectful yet firm engagement with Trump," standing out as a strong and composed figure on stage.

A key element of Harris’s success was her ability to focus on critical issues such as the economy, healthcare, and women’s rights.

While Trump often veered into side topics like the 2020 election or unsubstantiated claims, Harris remained focused on substantive concerns, emphasizing the importance of supporting small businesses, providing tax relief for young families, and ensuring healthcare access for all citizens.

Dr. Zogby observed that Trump “lost his composure on multiple occasions,” becoming entangled in personal grievances and undermining his own authority.

In contrast, Harris capitalized on these moments to further solidify her position.

Harris’s performance also resonated on the international stage.

Professor John Dabit, a member of the Democratic Party’s central committee, noted that NATO leaders and other global allies find Democratic candidates, including Harris, more approachable and reliable than Trump, who often employed an antagonistic stance.

Harris's balanced approach highlighted her diplomatic skills and readiness to strengthen international alliances, a critical contrast to Trump’s inconsistent foreign policy record.

Harris’s emphasis on economic and social issues further differentiated her from Trump. She discussed at length the role of government in promoting small business growth, expanding economic opportunities for young families, and improving healthcare access, while Trump focused on less pressing matters.

Professor Dabit said Harris "outmaneuvered Trump, steering the debate toward the issues that matter most to the American public."

Trump’s handling of key issues, including his connection to Project 2025, was called into question, further undermining his credibility.

Harris's exposure of these weaknesses played a significant role in her debate victory.

As the debate concluded, Kamala Harris emerged not only as a viable candidate but as a leader ready to take on the immense responsibility of guiding the nation.

Dr. Zogby stated that Harris demonstrated her capability to make tough decisions, reinforcing her growing popularity and making her a formidable contender in the race.

Professor Dabit predicted that Harris's strong debate performance would significantly boost her standing in upcoming polls, positioning her as the candidate best equipped to safeguard the country’s future.

Republican Party member Dr. Ashley Ansara highlighted a pivotal moment in the debate when Harris openly supported a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, marking a departure from Trump’s position.

This stance, Ansara noted, would likely garner Harris significant support from Arab American voters, providing her with an edge in key demographic groups.

Ansara also discussed the differences between Harris and Trump on issues such as abortion and the Ukraine war.

Trump emphasized that abortion laws should be determined at the state level, appealing to conservatives, while Harris's stance on Ukraine aligned with continued US and European support for the conflict, which raised questions about long-term implications.

On the topic of student loans, neither candidate provided clear solutions, with Ansara noting that the legal complexities would likely prevent outright cancellation without Supreme Court approval.

On immigration, Ansara pointed to the labour shortages in states like Texas and California, where both legal and illegal immigration plays a critical role in supporting the economy.

Harris’s stance on maintaining legal immigration was seen as essential for economic stability.

Ansara concluded by emphasizing the role of independent voters, who make up around 20 percent of the electorate, in determining the outcome of the election.

The unpredictable nature of this bloc means that while Harris may have gained momentum, the final result remains uncertain.

In the end, the debate showcased Kamala Harris as a leader prepared to navigate the complexities of both domestic and international challenges, setting the stage for a heated presidential race.
