The head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said Friday that the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize award was a "great honour" for the European Union's 500 million citizens.

"It is a great honour for the whole of the EU, all 500 million citizens," the head of the EU executive said on Twitter moments before he was due to host a packed press conference at his Brussels headquarters.
