Greek riot police on Thursday fired tear gas at protesters on the sidelines of an Athens rally against austerity held amid a general strike, an AFP reporter said.

They tried to repel protesters who broke through a police line outside luxury hotels near central Syntagma Square and then charged at the demonstrators, an AFP reporter said.
